Light tackle anglers have long been drawn to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. In the stretch between the vast tourist center of Cancun and the sparsely populated border of Belize are numerous bays and landlocked, salty lakes brimming with shallow water fishing opportunities.

 

 

Large seatrout are occasionally taken in this area. This one was landed on a previous trip, not far from Cancun.

 

The shallow, clear mangrove bays dotting the Yucatan Peninsula are tailor-made for fly fishing.

 

This snook was on the small side. Many will go into the 20-pound range.

 

Bonefish here aren't nearly as large as in Florida, but the little ones are fun to catch on fly tackle.

 

In the absence of regular fishing pressure, the baby tarpon are extremely aggressive.
