Itching to pull the trigger on a wild hog at close range? Join the discussion. This week the good-old .357 Magnum gets several thumbs-up from Florida Sportsman Members on the new Firearms section of the Hunting Forum. But then there are some serious hog-hunters who bring out the big guns. One member posted a photo of his Taurus 454 Casull Raging Bull, which he loads with 240 gr. Hornaday XTP Magnum rounds for 2,050 fps. Another shows off a classic S&W Model 29 .44 Magnum with 8 3/8-inch barrel. Both pistol hunters use scopes, and the consensus among them and other Members is that accurate shot placement is really the key to bringing down a tough hog. Head or neck shots with adequate round should bring a quick kill, whereas attempts at penetrating the heart or lungs may result in long tracking sessions.
If hunting public lands, be sure to consult regulations governing what kinds of firearms may be used during what seasons. For many WMAs, Small Game season permits only the use of a shotgun. On private lands where firearms discharge is not otherwise prohibited, and where you have lawful access, wild hogs may be hunted year-round with most weapons.
