New to the market but certainly not new to the industry, the two partners behind Sportsman supervised the production of over 75,000 boats over the years. The Sportsman 231 we tested was 22-feet, 9-inches in length and 8-foot, 6-inches in width. It was powered with a 250 Yamaha 4 stroke and in our view it was the perfect power combination. The 231 doesn't need the max horsepower of 300. The hull design surprised us with its ride and ability to keep us dry in a north wind topping 20 knots which had the river, just inside the inlet, chopped up. The all-composite construction gets its rigidity from a fiberglass stringer system that's bonded to the hull and back filled with foam. Under the port and starboard aft seats were two small baitwells, 8 gallons each, but Sportsman does offer an optional 30-gallon livewell leaner seat that replaces the helm leaner.
