Okeechobee Producing for Tournaments and New Anglers Alike

By Tyler Brinks

Bass fishing on Lake Okeechobee continues to be as good at it has for months. A tournament last weekend required over 33 pounds to win and the numbers of fish are there despite low water levels. I had the chance to get out on the Big O last week to see what everyone was talking about. The fish are still on the outside edges of the lake in the reeds and offshore eel grass and are biting a variety of soft plastics, topwater lures, spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits. It is a good time to get out and catch some fish on a your favorite lures or to introduce someone new to fishing, which is what I did last week.

My parents were in town from Las Vegas and we decided to get out on the "Big O" for some fishing and gator watching. My mother, Leslie Brinks was able to catch a few bass on a Zoom Trick Worm. After a unhooking her fish she told me that was the first bass she had ever caught in her life. She had caught other species, but her first bass was from legendary Lake Okeechobee. It's great to introduce someone to bass fishing, whether it's a child or your mother, the satisfaction is the same.
