Gulf red snapper season reminders
Don't forget: Recreational red snapper season for private vessels in the Gulf of Mexico does not open until June 11. Again, that's Monday, June 11.
Anglers aboard permitted for-hire (charter, partyboat) vessels have been able to keep red snapper since June 1, but not those on private vessels. Not saying we're thrilled about having to wait, but that's the way it is. On a very positive note: The season will run through July 20, and that includes both state and federal waters. That's a major improvement over past years—especially for those of us on the lower Gulf Coast of Florida who pretty much have to run out to federal waters (beyond 9 miles) to find red snapper. Bag limit is two per person, 16 inches total length minimum.
Two other reminders: Be sure to check that you have the free Gulf Reef Fish Angler endorsement on your license; it's easy to add online at https://gooutdoorsflorida.com/
Florida Sportsman also recommends participating in the iAngler Gulf Red Snapper program, through which you can use your smart phone to enter valuable data on your catches. Download the app in your app store.
