On this Episode – Hogs on the Hook

In this episode – Capt. George Gozdz heads out of Clearwater Beach with Cody Chivas in search of hog snapper on hook and line tackle. Making a 20-mile run, small ledges and sandy bottom in 60-feet of water or so were the key attributes for hogfish.

Small knocker rigs, with 1/0 hooks and pieces of shrimp and squid work best for hogs. Long fluorocarbon leaders are essential, especially when the fish are spooky. No need for heavy outfits either, this is light tackle fishing. By-catch of grunts and snapper species are popular. “If you’re not getting bit on every drop, you’re not fishing the right spot,” says Chivas.
