Much of the time, the standard treble hooks that some with new lures are of freshwater grade. For freshwater fisherman, that's perfect. For the saltwater fisherman, that spells problems. Ever open up your tackle drawer to find rusty trebles making a mess of things? Ever break a treble during a battle? The odds are, that answer is yes.

Sam Root of SaltyShores.com explains how to change those weak and rust prone trebles out for something stronger and more reliable in the saltwater environment, using only your fingernails. For smaller lures, a pair of split rings is sometimes too big, and most of us don't carry specialty tools like split ring pliers into the field. With a little demonstration, Sam makes an easy job of changing the nickle-plated hooks on these hard baits to 4X saltwater grade trebles.
