Catch More Muttons

Big mutton snapper roam the rocky outcroppings and sandy bottoms beyond the reef, as well as patch reefs closer to shore from Jupiter to Key West. Mutton snapper, a proven winner on the dinner table, is certainly on the menu. If you've ever been mutton snapper fishing, you many know there are some interesting techniques to enticing bites from these less than “care-free” feeders.  Managing Editor David Conway shares with us some proven rigs, old school and new school, which will have the muttons chewing, in his feature article “In Mutton Range.”

Thanks to voluntary action by anglers all over the state, the Snook and Gamefish Association paired with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, have been able to provide catch reports and stock assessments that will have snook anglers smiling. In his feature “State of the Snook,” Contributing Editor Brett Fitzgerald provides a breakdown of snook fishing trends and assessments from county to county; the results show we'll have great snook fishing.

Getting past hordes of small snappers in a chumline can be quite the challenge when using small chunk baits or live baits, but one thing is for sure, the big boys are back there. Executive Editor Jeff Weakley quickly figured out how to get baits past the schoolie snappers and back to the “flags” while yellowtail fishing, simply by using small, flashy, sinking plugs. Fall is a frenzy offshore, providing the perfect opportunity to get out and try “Pluggin' on the Reef.”

If you're an avid bird hunter, you certainly know the importance of having a good dog at your side. Of course, not all breeds are created alike, and choosing the right dog for your needs can be a daunting task. Feature writer Carolee Anita Boyles gives an overview of some of the most popular “pointing” and “retrieving” breeds for bird hunting to help us make a more informed decision when purchasing a helper for the hunt.

Fly Fishing

Setting the hook. It's most crucial moment between angler and fish. FS seminar writer Chris O'Bryan gives “Three Tips on the Hook Set,” while behind a fly rod. Sharp hooks, preparation, patience, and more will lead to a more solid connection between you and the fish.
