Brightening Up Boynton Beach

Judy Dempsey, an artist in Boynton Beach, sent in this snapshot of a recent mural she painted outside a local business.

“It's a family-owned pharmacy for 20 years, Medication Station on East Woolbright Road in Boynton,” she wrote. “I've been doing murals about 10 years. I never thought I could do this for a living. I worked in retail most of my life until a friend made me try this. I'm a single mom. Just put my daughter in college. I love what I do. I paint every subject but my passion is fish and I live in a great place for that."

The mural shows a classic Florida scene: mahi-mahi are balling up baitfish under a sargassum patch, and one of them, a bull, has just been duped by a sportfisher trolling nearby.

"That's the owner's favorite fish," said Dempsey. "He has a house in the Keys and wanted to have something of the Keys on the building. The funny thing is people think it is a bait and tackle shop now instead of a pharmacy! He actually just commissioned me to do a 5 foot by 4 foot replica of the mural on canvas for his Keys home."
