With Cooler Weather Come Wahoo

Well, it’s official! The first leg of the 2008-2009 Bahamas Wahoo Championship will be held November 12-15th and the venue will be Old Bahama Bay, Grand Bahama Island.

The Wahoo Championship this season has been completely revamped in order to keep up with the changing times. Note the important changes: - no boundaries - we have reduced the running time - we have limited the entries to inboard engine boats only which will “slow” down the championship

We are hoping that this will bring a change towards a relaxing, quality fishing event rather than a competition based on speed. We aim to bring back a lot of boats that dropped out of wahoo fishing because they felt that they could not compete against the speed of the fast outboard boats. We have attempted to level the playing field and look forward to welcoming back those former competitors.

The venue for the first leg is absolutely fantastic. Old Bahama Bay is a quality, AAA Four Diamond Award property and they are going out of their way to welcome anglers.

Peter Watson, the famed Marina Director/Harbour Master will be offering you a dockage rate of $1.00 per foot, good to November 15th. His Marina at Old Bahama Bay has been recently renovated and has every service available that you may require. The channel is well lit for night navigation. You have plenty of draft in the channel and in the marina for your vessel. The marina also has Bahamas Customs and Immigration facilities available for your easy, one stop clearance into the country.

The management at Old Bahama Bay is offering you a Junior Ocean View suite for a discounted rate of $239.00 per night (plus applicable taxes). A two bedroom suite is available for $310 per night plus taxes. These rates are available for tournament participants only and YOU MUST ASK FOR THE WAHOO TOURNAMENT rates when making your reservations. We have blocked a limited number of rooms and slips and we ask you to kindly reserve early in order not to be disappointed.

Now, for the Wahoo fishing! Old Bahama Bay is very close to the northern Wahoo fishing grounds of the Bahamas. Last year, these waters produced what we believe was the heaviest Wahoo in the Bahamas, a 104 pound specimen.

One major change this year is that the entry fee into the tournament HAS to be paid to the Bahamas Wahoo Championship tournament committee. Please do NOT pay the entry fee to the resort. They will not accept it. Entry fee checks have to be made payable to Raul V Miranda. Raul will collect the entry fee monies and disburse them in the form of trophies, give-away items and food and beverage functions and other expenses associated with running the tournament.

The second leg of the Bahamas Wahoo Championship has been scheduled for February 4-7, 2009. The venue will be announced at a later date. The third and final leg will be at Chub Cay, Berry Islands February 25-28, 2009. The Awards ceremony for the Bahamas Wahoo Championship will be held at the Chub Cay event.
