Competition Tackle's Dolphin Round Up begins June 1
May 29, 2008. Competition Tackle’s 12th Annual Dolphin Round Up is set to begin June 1 in Fort Lauderdale, and it runs through June 29. It’s been a great dolphin season so far in South Florida, with big, big bulls being caught every week for the last month, with only a few down stretches of poor fishing.
A field of 41 teams fished the Warm-Up events for the tournament the previous two tournaments, May 18 and May 24. Dolphin were there, but finicky.
Wally Davis, on the right, with teammate Kenny Lombardo and their Warm-Up winning dolphin.
Capt. Wally Davis of Davis Plumbing won the Warm Up with a 38.3 pound Dolphin, which he caught about nine miles offshore in his Proline 27. The fish ate a skirted ballyhoo.
John Romano and wife Laurie, second place Warm Up winners.
Second place went to John Romano, who with wife Laurie in the vessel R-Time caught a 27.7 pound Dolphin (caught on a Sea Spooks rigged squid). They led the first week.
Beverly Freeman and husband Joe placed third.
Third Place went to Beverly Freeman (in the photo with her spouse Joe), on the boat Fin City. She caught an 18.2 pound Dolphin. She was using a Sea Rogue Bubble.
Fourth Place went to Troy Hughes of Magic Stick with a 16 pound dolphin.
No doubt there will be a number of large fish caught again this weekend, just in time for the Round Up’s start on Sunday. A few 50-pounders for certain, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this were to be the weekend of the season’s first 70-pounder (that we hear about caught off Florida).
Good luck to all competitors in this benefit tournament. For more info check out www.hospicecareflorida.org. Call (954) 581-4476.
