Big Cats, Big Tournament, Big Cash
The Olympics of Catfishing in Florida is Here. If you haven't checked out the catfish action in Wewahitchka, here's your chance. The 10th Annual Florida Catfish Classic will be on August 29th and 30th, sponsored by the Employees Club of the City of Wewahitchka. It's another in a fine series of catfish tournies. Read Jerry McBride's story on the Big Cats in the July issue of Florida Sportsman. For more on the BIg Cat Event...

By Jerry McBride, Associate Editor

My 8-inch live bait wanted to be somewhere else.

Leashed to a 10-ounce anchor, leaving wasn’t an option. The bait’s sudden jitteriness sent a clear message up my braided line—he wasn’t alone down there. A long series of subtle taps ensued, reminiscent of a snapper toying with its next meal. I pointed my rodtip toward the water, coiled to strike when the predator finally pounced.

They'll give you a workout...

It never came. After teasing me for an excruciatingly long minute, the line simply tightened as my quarry wandered off with the bait.

“Rip his dentures out,” Angie Minchew commanded.

I slammed the rod upward, immediately dipping it back to the water to repeat the process. The 7/0 hook found its mark, and the bottom fish reacted as bottom fish do, digging for the structure it never strays far from. The unyielding rod and locked-down drag gradually pried the fish upward. Don Minchew moved alongside, oversize landing net poised to envelop the thrashing, dark brown fish.
