TEAM GOOGANATOR Well we put in and traded some greenbacks for greenbacks. The pilchards on one side, gogs on the other, and they stayed happy all day with the new livewell setup. The plugs got fouled from idling around waiting for the bimini start, but after they cleared themselves we were moving pretty well, the arneson drive's rooster tail was in fine form. We decided to gamble and fish south and shallow knowing everyone else would be fishing north (and with good reason ). The west wind (or lack thereof) was going to be messing everyone up. We don't have helium so we were going to be fishing the deep spread and a balloon. The sea anchor just hung straight down, we had no drift. It turned out that we couldn't shake the small kings and sails. After 4-5 small kings and breaking off a few sails we decided to catch one of the sails. The wind finally picked up enough to get a kite into the air. Not so surprisingly, by the time we got up to Boca and our drifts were starting deeper, we hooked into something a little better than average. On the shotgun flat, hit a wire rig and not even on a pilchard... Took a good 15 minutes to land because it was back so far, and by now the day is pretty much done, as is our bait. The 1971 Seabird playboy cruiser turned semi-modern fishing boat, at the floating dock. Justin over the kingfish bag. The blackfin weighed 27.4, we didn't think any kings would weigh but they suggested weighing a couple at the dock, they were both 8 and change. If we'd have been in 12-15 pound kings all day it may have been a little more interesting Thanks to Nick for coming down from Orlando and running the boat, thanks to Justin and his dad for helping to make these things possible, and a special thanks to Carl (Justin's dad) for keeping things just googan enough out there to stay fun without becoming too serious. It is fun to fish these things. >>Forum Thread & More Photos
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED After talking about it a few times, Ray and I finally fished together. We met at my boat late in the afternoon with the hopes of hooking into one of the blackfin that have been cruising thru. To say we strgulled to get bait would be an understatement. At 7pm we finally headed out with a grand total of 7 pilchards. We set up in 290' with a decent north drift and the wind pushing us slowly in. We had a couple strikes, but no solid hook-ups. At 8:30... in 130'... one of the deep rods goes off. At 9pm.... this guy is in the boat! Mission accomplished! >>Forum Thread & More Photos
CUBANS, PERMIT & BONEFISH Had the great pleasure to fish with my dear friend and coworker Tuesday with my long time friend Joe Gonzalez. Joe is truly the best flats fisherman I know. The conditions were terrible. We get out there and the winds were blowing 20 knots from the WNW. We decided to hit the leeward side of the Elliot key. As soon as we get out there we were flagged down by 14 cubans smuggled there the night before and left on Island. We called the Coast Guard and local authorities and stayed there until they arrived which seemed like eternity but we were grateful that they were in good health and on "dry land" With that good deed behind us the fish Gods must have been watching over us. It was a flood tide (2 days after full moon) we decided to search for Permit. We chased a few loners but they were not interested. We were also in a huge school of Tarpon but none were interested in live crab or lures. Then we went to a spot that I swear we literally saw hundreds of permit. They were not big but in massive schools. They were so concentrated that it almost looked like mullet schools. Anyhow, in 2.5 hours of fishing we caught 6 Permit and 1 large Bonefish. >>Forum Thread & More Photos
HUMP WAHOO It was the wifes birthday on Sunday and took her fishing. Loaded up on pilchards nice and early and headed for the 409 Hump in search of dolphin. Did not see nothing on the way out but as soon as we got close to the hump there where birds all over the place. Got a skipjack to the boat instantly and then both of my port lines go off. My wife grabs one rod and me the other, well I assist her with hers and put my rod on the rod holder and she tells looks like a barracuda as soon as I look Mr. WAHOO...Got him in the boat and then gaffed mine. A bunch of schoolies where with traveling with them and ended up talking 6 nice schoolies and 3 wahoos. Not bad taking into consideration the night before the moon was as bright as can be down in the keys. >>Forum Thread & More Photos |
