SURF MONSTER Late post, but i just figured out how to post pictures so i decided i'd share caught it up in vero on a stradic 8000 and a giant popper. I was targeting sharks but this was a nice suprise. Took about 175/200 yards on her first run. Then riped 50-75 yards now and again. She finaly gave up and I pumped her back in. I was never worried though, I had had just spooled up w/ 400+ yards of 20lb braid. 7' 15-30 gloomis pro blue. Its the nicest (if not most expensive) rod i have ever purchased. It casts both plugs and livies well, is light weight, has an oversized rod tip eye that allows leader nots to pass through easily, adn has enough backbone to to whip big fish. I've had it for two years now, and except for some fish slime worked into the handle it is good as new. >>Forum Thread & More Photos
BIG DOLPHIN The weather looked like it would fishable for Saturday so My dad and I, along with my Dad's buddy (Don) headed out of Ft. Pierce at about 6:15 a.m. The water was cold in close so we kept pressing east until we found some warmer water to fish. There was no structure except for a few very scattered weeds in the area but we put lines out and trolled deeper. The first couple hours were dead, with no hits at all, but at around 9:30 the outrigger popped, shortly followed by the shotgun going off and just like that we had 2 nice dolphin on. Don brought his in first and it was a nice 21 lb. cow...mine was next and turned out to be what was shortly our boat record dolphin-34 lbs. Those 2 fish woke us up and we continued trolling for another hour or so with nothing else to show until Don spotted a couple birds working a small area. We worked these couple of birds for close to 30 mins. when finally the shotgun went off and immediately after, the outrigger popped and we had another 2 dolphin on. My dad brought the first fish in which was a cow identical to the first (21 lbs.) but mine was giving us a little more trouble. I got him up to the boat and he immediately took off before we could gaff him...15 mins. later I had him boatside and my Dad stuck him. This fish went completely nuts when he hit the deck..causing a 5 min. wrestling match in the back of the boat to get him under control. With all the chaos we didnt get a real good look at him before throwing him in the box but we guessed him to be in the high 30's. We knew we had broken the boat record for the second time in one trip. With 4 nice fish in the box, we started trolling west hoping to pick up a stray before running in. About an hour later the downrigger rod went off and we put yet another 21 lb. cow in the boat. We headed in shortly after that and once we pulled the fish out at the dock, we realized our "high 30's" fish might be a little bigger than we thought. The handheld scale read 53 lbs...so we took it to DeBrooks to get an official weight and it went 53.80 . This gave us just over 150 lbs. with our 5 fish...definitely a great trip. SOUTH INDIAN RIVER We enjoyed some great fishing weather this week. A few cool and windy days to keep you home, but overall spring has arrived here on the Treasure Coast. Look for nicer weather as May nears and fishing to continue to improve for trout and redfish on the flats. We had some great fun out there and look forward to much more in the coming weeks! We fished for a variety of fish this week from grouper to trout. While we got busted by some nice grouper, finally Lawson Taylor muscled in a 27" gag grouper from around the seawalls in Fort Pierce. Both 14 year old Megan Lundy and 10 year old Rachel Taylor had big grouper bites only to lose the battle with them. We used live pinfish for our action this week. Lawson Taylor muscled in this 27" gag grouper from the seawalls...Trout was the other species we went out in search of. Rachel and Patrick Taylor both landed some trout off the flats that were all in slot size. Patrick even boated a good size bluefish around the docks this week. Live pinfish or shrimp along with DOA CAL jerk baits are the best options for trout lately. The winds allowed us to drift the flats at a leisurely pace and fish them thoroughly. Queen's Cove and Harbor Branch has been good producing sites and when Bear Point is fishable....give it a try also. 10 year old, Rachel Taylor caught several trout from the flats...Redfish have been pretty quiet this week. It's been hard to fish with the windy weather, but we have seen a number of them in the shallows and it should turn on at any time out there. Snook has been mostly a nighttime adventure. I talked to several returning anglers in the early morning that have caught some slot size along with some oversize and a good number of shorts. Live bait or jigs have worked best. Patrick Taylor found this bluefish hiding under a Fort Pierce dock...Catwalks and jetties have been pretty quiet with all the winds to keep anglers from venturing out. Lots of jacks around the river and some bigger ones in the inlets. Young Megan battled several 20 to 25 pound jacks, but they got the best of her in the end. It was fun to fight those bruisers though! The surf has produced whiting when the beachers could get out there. A lot of days was more like fishing in sandpaper. It has been a good week and this weekend should be great weather to venture out on the river and even the ocean. Tip of the Week: Lots of smaller pinfish and pigfish have been around the flats. It's time to get out the ol' fish traps and use some of these plentiful fish for some great trout action. Floating a pigfish on a popping cork will keep some of the daredevil bait snatchers from bothering you like they do on live shrimp. Lots of fish around the flats will take the opportunity for an easy meal. Have some fun soon, especially with the young anglers. As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!! >>Forum Thread & More Photos
UNREAL DOUBLEHEADER My buddies sent me a picture from Venice, LA while they were trolling around some of the oil rigs out there I didn't believe it at first but if some one had the ball$ to grab either of these fish and stick them on the hook then they were pretty brave. That is an 8 inch yo-zuri bonita in both of there mouths! I have caught 2 bluefish on the same lure and 2 bass on the same lure at once but this will be hard to beat. >>Forum Thread & More Photos |
