Volunteers reattach coral off Palm Beach's Breakers Hotel.

Volunteers donned scuba gear in 68-degree water temperatures to reattach coral in 60 feet of water off Palm Beach. No one knows exactly what happened to the Breakers Reef and coral, but it's suspected a large ship laid waste to football-size sections of reef by way of a lackadaisical cable. The Department of Environmental Protection's investigation is currently inconclusive.

Below are photos of the dive, courtesy of photographer Steve Spring and the Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management:

Corals to be reattached ranged in diameter from 10 inches to three feet. Read the complete article at the Palm Beach Post’s Web site .
Protocol for the divers was to submerge 60 feet to the ocean floor, with a bucket of Portland cement, and reattach at least 103 corals sliced from the bottom. The alkaline cement could not come into contact with the outside living skin of the coral. Read the complete article at the Palm Beach Post’s Web site .
