Woolly Bugger gets Upgrade
Limited “Bully Bugger” fly celebrates Theodore Roosevelt’s 150th birthday.
Variations to one of freshwater fly fishermen’s most venerable flies—the Woolly Bugger—commemorates Theodore Roosevelt’s impact on American conservation.
“Throughout his life, [Roosevelt] hunted way more than he fished,” says Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) president George Cooper, “but things might have been different if he’d had the ‘Bully Bugger.’ It evokes the same patriotism that T.R. exuded, and they’ve got similar flair.”
Guide, author and fly-tier Craig Mathews teamed up with the TRCP to introduce a new twist for the Bully Bugger. The Bully Bugger has a set of miniaturized, wire-rimmed spectacles with an uncanny resemblance to those worn by President Roosevelt.
“Heck, they’ve even got the same prescription!” Mathews quips.
Mathews will tie a total of 150 Bully Buggers. The first Bully Bugger gets custom-framed and auctioned on eBay. (Bidding begins Dec. 1 and lasts for 10 days.) The other 149 will be mounted on handmade, wooden shadowboxes and given to those who donate $150 or more to the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership www.trcp.com.
