Land Access to Haulover Inlet in Jeopardy
Parking in the lots underneath Baker’s Haulover Inlet Bridge could soon be by permit only.
Landlubber fishermen know Haulover Inlet well. Huge boulders recede into the waters well inside this inlet located in Bal Harbour Village. The paved south jetty is popular for its countless jumbo snook and tarpon catches. Surfers flock to the beach south of the inlet.
In an effort to curtail noise and vagrancy around the inlet’s parking lots, fishermen could inadvertently be shut out of access to the inlet after dark. There are several proposals for the Florida Department of Transportation-owned lots on the south side of the inlet.
Proposals include an obligatory fishing permit for those who wish to park at the lots from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Another would call for a general permit to park in the lots at anytime of day. Still others call for not allowing any parking in the lots after dark, or closing the lots at some point in the early morning.
There is a public meeting to provide information and receive comments regarding the hours of operation for the parking lots under the Herman B. Fultz Bridge. The date is Tuesday, July 15, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gwen Margolis Community Center in North Miami. The address is 1590 NE 123 Street.
