Florida Tarpon Capital to get Revamped
Volunteers are needed to help remove human-generated debris from Boca Grande Pass.
Boca Grande Pass is the epicenter for diehard tarpon anglers in Florida. But with the tremendous fishing, comes degradation in the form of human-generated debris.
The Boca Grande Pass Underwater Cleanup is a concerted effort by Boca Grande residents to help clean up the world-famous pass. The coordinated effort by divers and support vessels will take place Tuesday, April 1st.
Longtime Boca Grande residents Capt. Nat Italiano and Walter "Chris" Klingel are heading up the event. Divers will be coordinated by Divemaster Jim Joseph of Fantasea Dive Center in Port Charlotte. Captains who utilize Boca Grande Pass are specifically being asked to donate their vessels and their expertise for the day in support of this effort.
In past efforts, tons of debris have been cleared from the floor and ledges of this unique pass. Among the recovered items were many anchors and ropes, heavy wire cable and chain, fishing rods and reels, and fishing terminal gear of all types and sizes.
Those who wish to contribute necessary funds or personal support to this cause should contact Capt. Nat Italiano at (941) 964 -0400. Individuals interested in diving the waters to help remove debris must get approval through Jim Joseph at (941) 627- 0089.
