Gulf Council Forum on Grouper Feb. 26
Topics for the Forum include updates on the status of grouper species and current management proposals.
As part of the Gulf Council Forum on February 26, fish regulators are asking for stakeholders’ opinions. Fishermen should heed the call, and attend the meeting at FWC’s Fish & Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg, from 6 to 10 p.m. February 26 is during the annual Gulf Federal closure for gag, red and black grouper, so you won’t miss a night of “grouper digging.”
Topics of discussion include grouper status updates, the role of science in defining management objectives and current management proposals. The Council is asking for input on these key issues from all stakeholders interested in the Gulf Grouper fishery. Also, get updated on the latest grouper regulations like the requirements of circle hooks (with natural baits), venting tools and de-hooking devices when fishing for any reef fish.
Discuss your concerns, ask a question or explain what you’re seeing on the water during the “frequently asked question” section of registration. Register online for free at www.Gulfcouncil.org, and click on “2008 Grouper Forum Registration.”
The Council is currently developing an amendment that will affect gag and red grouper in the Gulf. Expect dates for those public hearings to come around the end of March, says Charlene Ponce of the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council.
