SAFMC to Hold Public Meetings on Allocations, Annual Catch Limits
The SAFMC planned two February public meetings in Florida on such issues as recreational and commercial allocations, Annual Catch Limits and mackerel quotas.

Atlantic Coast anglers who want their opinions heard about coastal fisheries management should attend South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC) meetings Feb. 4 or 5. The first meeting is at the Mutiny Hotel in Coconut Grove on Monday, Feb. 4 and the second is at the Radisson in Port Canaveral on Tuesday, Feb. 5. The meetings will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The public can attend at any time during these hours.

Topics for comment include:

1. Comprehensive Allocation Amendment: Possible methods of allocation between recreational and commercial fishermen.
2. Amendment 17 to the Snapper Grouper Fishery Management Plan: Discussion of Annual Catch Limits (ACLs) as mandated by the re-authorized Magnuson-Stevens Act, possible further reductions in snowy grouper landings, and other issues.
3. Additionally, the Council is soliciting public comment on the establishment of a Limited Access Privilege Program for the commercial snapper grouper fishery as well as input on the allocation of the commercial Atlantic king mackerel quota.

This is the first time that the majority of the Council’s technical staff, including the SEDAR Stock Assessment Coordinator, will be on hand to answer questions and discuss these scoping issues and other topics. Staff and Council members will be available throughout the meeting hours. Copies of the meeting documents are available at www.safmc.net, or by calling the Council office. Written comments can also be submitted until February 22, 2008; details are in the scoping documents.
