For those boats that fish The Bahamas Wahoo Challenge at Old Bahama Bay, good things come to those who help others.
The two-day tournament had impressive catches, expected for The Bahamas, a Mecca for wahoo. The 18-boat fleet came in loaded each day with fish for viewers and bystanders to gawk at. The eventual winner, Savanna Lynn, a 36-foot Yellowfin, had a two-day poundage of 201.19. That averages to more than 50 pounds a fish.
But the 39-foot Venture, Zephyros, stole the spotlight this tournament. Day 1 of the tournament, Zephyros left the docks during weigh-in, and delivered gas offshore to a stranded, fellow tournament vessel, Triple Chief. There good favor did not go unseen. Day 2 of the tournament, the crew of Zephyros, brought to the scales a wahoo topping 104 pounds. The 104.75-pounder was a Bahamian tournament record. As a tournament press release described it, "the fish looked like it was missing some kind of naval markings."
The fish was no torpedo, but it won the crew of Zephyros an extra $17,000.
In last year's tournament, the crew aboard Nothin' Wild helped shuttle the tournament committee to West End after their ride had boat issues. Nothin' Wild then went on to weigh in a 95-pound monster wahoo, and win the tournament plus $48,000.
For the 2009 tourney, if the boat that does the most deeds at the Bahamas Wahoo Challenge at Old Bahama Bay wins the tournament or the big fish, karma changes from a two-time fluke to a requirement.
