Ultimate Billfish Slam
A South Carolina crew aboard Summer Girl landed two white marlin, two swordfish, a sailfish and a blue marlin all in a single trip.
A South Carolina crew did what most bluewater anglers dream of—the Grand Billfish Slam. Not in exotic waters where most veteran offshore anglers agree the best chances swim, but in their own backyard.
Dean Kelly, Buck Howell, Josh White, Danny Stewart, Mike Jackson and Stevie Leasure departed from Ripley Light Marina in Charleston one early-December morning. Co-owner and captain Stevie Leasure, steered them 50 miles out to the Gulf Stream. The first fish landed was a 30-pound sailfish, followed by a 40-pound white marlin. Next, Josh White hooked into a monster blue marlin, and after a mighty fight, brought the estimated 275-pounder boatside.
The crew would have to wait till nightfall until a swordfish finally took one of their baits. In between, a second white marlin was brought in, as well as a thresher shark. Nearing 8 p.m., Jackson landed the first swordfish to seal the deal. Stewart hooked a second, moments later. They had their Super Slam and more, and that called for celebration. Friends were waiting for the crew at the docks when they returned at midnight.
