Thirty disabled and special needs children from The Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida and the surrounding area will get a taste of the outdoors Nov. 3. The Cape Coral event marks the final Florida outing of the year for the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation, a nonprofit organization.
Kids get a free rod and reel, tackle box, hat and t-shirt before boarding boats with local captains, guides and boaters for a day of fishing. After lunch, participants attend the awards ceremony to receive a plaque featuring a picture of themselves with their captain.
"This is a reminder of the simple things that every kid enjoys—the smiles are priceless," says Karl Zimmermann, sponsor of three previous C.A.S.T events.
Special guest at this event is FLW Tour angler and motivational speaker Clay Dyer. Dyer was born without legs, a left arm, or the lower portion of his right arm, and still competes at the highest level of bass competition. Dyer was introduced to fishing through a program similar to that conducted by C.A.S.T. for Kids when he was a child, and regularly shares his inspirational story with others to assist them in overcoming the obstacles in their lives.
