SAFMC Seeks Public Comment on Future Gag and Vermilion Limits
The Council has six meetings planned throughout the Southeast to listen to public comments on the best means to reduce overfishing of these two economically important species.
Tell the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC) what you feel are the best options to reduce pressure on the gag grouper and vermilion snapper. Considerable changes are in the works for the two species after a report by Southeastern Data, Assessment, and Review (SEDAR) revealed in order to maintain the optimum yield for vermilion snapper, a 61 percent decrease is needed. The SAFMC must also reduce gag grouper catches by similar percentages. Amendment 16 to the Snapper Grouper Fishery Management Plan for the South Atlantic is in the works, and the SAFMC wants your opinion. Drastic reductions in both the commercial and recreational catches are coming within a year. What modifications to current regulations, and potential new measures, do recreational anglers want to happen for the necessary reductions-- things like closed seasons, recreational boat limits and commercial trip limits. All locations to discuss Amendment 16 have a start time of 6 p.m. and are listed below.
