Gas Prices Rocket, Fishermen Get Hit in the Pocket
Rising gas prices will cause outdoorsmen and women to fish, hunt and travel less than previous years, says a recent poll.
According to a recent survey of 2,481 sportsmen and women conducted by AnglerSurvey.com, over half of all anglers will travel or fish less because of higher gas prices.
Forty percent of hunters report rising gas prices will reduce their outdoor activities, travel distances or boat use. The rest of the anglers and hunters surveyed indicated that rising fuel prices would not hinder their outdoor activity, or were not sure of the impacts.
“We’ve seen in past research that rising gasoline prices depress fishing license sales in many areas, but the recent increases in fuel prices are unprecedented,” AnglerSurvey.com economist Rob Southwick remarked.
“Many anglers and hunters gradually accept higher prices and they will return and participate as they have before. However, until the effects of higher fuel prices can be moderated via higher efficiency engines and other solutions, we may lose some hunters and anglers completely.”
