Generators Cool in Flamingo
RV’s in the “C” loop section of the Flamingo campground are allowed to run generators uninterrupted.
Camping overnight in Everglades National Park (ENP) became much more bearable with the allowance of generators in specified camping sites of the Flamingo campground. The interim program permits campers to use generators from May 26, 2007 through October 1, 2007.
“This relaxation of generator use during the 2007 summer season is an effort to accommodate overnight visits to Flamingo since the popular Flamingo lodge was destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma in 2005,” said Superintendent Dan Kimball.
Campsites in the "C" loop, farthest away from other campers, are designated for generator use, but must comply with noise regulations. Generators cannot exceed a noise level of 60 decibels measured from 50 feet (36 CFR 2.12).
Park staff will monitor the new program to ensure there are no significant impacts to other campers’ experiences. “We are always interested in improving the visitor’s experience of the park,” said Kimball. “C” loop sites have picnic tables and grills, but restrooms in the loop remain closed. The dump station is available for RV use.
