Discharges on Palm Beach Reefs Proposed
Permit may allow wastewater discharge on reefs offshore Lake Worth.
Fishermen, divers, surfers and citizens can voice concerns about proposed discharges on Palm Beach County’s most spectacular coral reefs.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) may issue a permit that would allow wastewater from reverse osmosis plant (RO), a process used to treat water from the Floridan Aquifer, to be released one mile offshore Lake Worth.
Spurred by nearly 800 protest e-mails, a public meeting will be held by the FDEP June 18, at 2 p.m. The meeting place is Lake Worth City Hall located at 7 North Dixie Highway, and can be phoned for directions at (561) 586-1600.
Organizations such as Palm Beach County Reef Rescue and the Surfrrider Foundation are concerned that nutrient pollutants will promote growth on the fragile coral reef ecosystem. Several South Florida cities already have systems that successfully dispose of RO waste without injecting it into the ocean.
