Dolphin Tagging Program Raps up Record Year
Mind-blowing migration data captured
The Dolphin Tagging Research Project has completed its first year as a privately operated research program, and 1,510 fish were tagged between Montauk and Texas. Researchers report 44 recoveries. One fish was recovered more than 1,000 miles from where it was tagged. Only eight other fish in the five-year history of the study became members of the β1,000-mile club.β This latest recovery was caught off of Key West in June, and anglers fishing Spencer Canyon off New Jersey re-captured it 22 days later. The fish had grown by an estimated 17 inches.
Data from other recoveries show dramatic migrations with daily movements of up to 79 miles.
βThe great success and achievements of the 2006 program clearly showed that a private research company could successful carry out such a large scale project,β said Don Hammond, research director for the ongoing project.
