Twelve kids from as far away as Maine, Nebraska and Washington will soon have a chance to prove their fishing wiles. The competition, slated for Feb. 24-26 on Lake Toho in Kissimmee, could prod some of the youngsters to consider a career as bass fishermen. After all, they did eliminate all comers to receive the invitation to this prestigious final. When quizzed what they would do with their winnings if they emerged on top, one contestant said, “Throw a big party.” Another replied, “Go crazy and dance.”

Ryan Mellette, 14, of Okeechobee represents the Southern division. “I’m really excited to go up there, and I think I have a really good chance,” he said.

Claiming the title, however, will be tough. There is $21,000 in scholarships up for grabs besides bragging rights. And what young angler wouldn’t want to be crowned the 2006 CastingKids champion?
