Day 1 of the West Palm Beach Fishing Club’s Silver Sailfish Derby Yields 258 Fish
50 boats fishing in the West Palm Beach Fishing Club’s 69th annual Silver Sailfish Derby released 258 sailfish on the first day of the tournament, surpassing last year’s three-day total of 208. Team Catch One, led by Capt. Matt Alligood and Mark Wodlinger took the lead with 18 releases. When the team was faced with a double header that went tailwalking away in opposite directions, Wodlinger grabbed one rod and two life jackets and jumped overboard. The boat chased the southbound sail, and returned for Wodlinger once it was released. Wodlinger came back aboard, and caught-and-released the northbound fish.
Team Chips Ahoy, led by Chip Sheehan, was in second place with 15 releases and Team Murray, led by Rob Murray, was in third with 14 releases.
