Hot Jig Gig
Pompano make a strong appearance in Southeast Florida.
What’s silver and yellow, fights like a jack and tickles the taste buds? Pompano, of course. And, if this week is any indication, it’s time to sharpen the fillet knife because there seems to be plenty of these tasty critters at hand.
Reports from Sebastian to Jupiter highlight the “butterballs” and with good reason. Pompano fishing is fantastic at the moment. Anglers tossing jigs over well-known pompano flats seem to be experiencing little trouble catching a limit. Surfcasters are reeling them in, too.
In case you forgot, the Florida limit was reduced last year to six pomps per person and size minimum was increased from 10 to 11 inches fork length. That should be enough for anyone, considering that most folks are catching fish that average two or so pounds apiece.
