Duck Heaven
Manmade marsh new duck hunting oasis.

This season, the South Florida Water Management District is providing tremendous new duck hunting on STA 3-4. The hunts are run by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

Hunters have thoroughly enjoyed some of the state’s most productive hunts on STA 5, and last year, the District opened STA 1 West, which proved just as productive. The hunting opportunity on STA 3/4 adds more than 16,000 acres of access to stellar waterfowling.

Last Saturday, Florida Sportsman staff hunted STA 3/4, and limited out easily. The bags included bluewing teal, a Florida mottled duck, a ringbill and a mature drake pintail. Also spotted were widgeon, fulvous whistling

ducks and shovelers.

More than 100 hunters took advantage of the opportunity, and most took home ducks. FWC and District officials said the hunt went smoothly and that hunters were very conscientious about picking up after themselves.

“We’re excited to see so many generations of fathers and sons, fathers and daughter, and husbands and wives hunting together,” said Jerry Krenz, the District official in charge of recreational use on district lands. “These are great opportunities to introduce new hunters to the sport.”
