All Eyes Out for Bones
Third annual bonefish count to help estimate South Florida bonefish population.
The third annual Bonefish Tarpon Unlimited/Rosenstiel School bonefish census will take place on Thursday, Sept. 29. The purpose of the census is to determine population trends from Key Biscayne to the Marquesas.
Last year, anglers in 52 boats counted sighted bonefish across 19 zones within these survey boundaries over the course of one day. An analysis of the numbers allowed biologists to estimate a population of just over 310,000 bonefish in the Biscayne Bay/Florida Keys fishery. The census thus far has helped establish that the 300,000-plus bones represent the estimate of fish of a size targeted for catch-and-release bonefishing, which contributes approximately $1.5 billion to the Florida economy.
This year, participants will attempt to locate additional areas of nursery habitat where juvenile bonefish in the 2- to 12-inch range are found. Guides and flats anglers who would like to participate in the census are encouraged to call (305) 664-5423 or (305) 421-4884.
