Bonefish Tarpon Unlimited Hosts Public Seminar
The non-profit group and its science partners will disclose tagging program findings. Bonefish Tarpon Unlimited (BTU), a non-profit group that is collaborating with the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science to research bonefish and tarpon behavior, is hosting a free public seminar to disclose findings from their 2 nd Annual Florida Keys Bonefish Census tagging program. Satellite tags on tarpon and transmitters implanted in bonefish have revealed a number of migratory patterns that have amazed researchers. For example, one bonefish tagged in Biscayne Bay was recaptured south of Marathon. Yet another bonefish visited the same flat 40 days in a row at precisely the same tidal phase. The satellite tag results thus far seem to confirm the belief that tarpon migrate thousands of miles each year, such as between Central America and the U.S. coastlines. The presentation will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, January 17 at the Islamorada Fishing Club (adjacent to the Lorelei restaurant). Free hors d’oeuvres will be served and there will be a cash bar. Seating is limited, RSVP by contacting Sandy Moret at (305) 664-5423 or flkeyout@bellsouth.net FS |
