Interested in Managing Some Fish?
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC), one of eight regional councils charged with managing fish stocks from three to 200 miles offshore of North and South Carolina, Georgia and east Florida, is seeking individuals to serve on management advisory panels to provide information and guidance in the development and implementation of fishery management plans.
The advisory panels are diverse, made up of recreational and commercial fishermen, seafood dealers and processors, scientists, conservationists and concerned citizens.
SAFMC is soliciting new applicants for openings on various fishery management advisory panels. The panel members are appointed by the Council and serve for a 3-year period, based on frequency of meetings, which are typically held no more than once or twice yearly. Panel members are compensated for travel and per diem expenses. The number of open seats varies from panel to panel, and there are presently opening on panels that manage calico scallop, coral, habitat and environmental protection, kingfish/Spanish Mackerel, rock shrimp, shrimp, snapper/grouper and spiny lobster.
Interested individuals can obtain an application by contacting the Council office at (866) SAFMC-10 or (843) 571-4366. You can also get an application online at www.safmc.net. Applications must be received by Nov 22, 2004.
