July 31-August 2

Cyndi Lanier and Morgan Harlan with Cyndi’s 23 pound red snapper.

July will go out with a bang because red snapper season will end for us just like it started, with some really nice fish. In our last two trips we have caught nine fish weighing 15-pounds or more with two of those weighing 22 and 24 pounds.

Our attention will turn to grouper. Look for those fish around hard or natural bottom. Live bait will always be the key. Heavy rods with reels with great drags. My choice is the Accurate Valiant series 800 two-speed. 80-pound braided line with 50 feet of 80 pound mono top shot and 10/0 VMC Nemesis circle hooks.

Tripletail are still around. Toss a live shrimp and anything floating or shallow structure. King mackerel are hitting cigar minnows trolled or on a flatlines from 30 to 100 feet of water. Keep an eye on the weather as the weekend approaches. Looks like we have a tropical storm headed our way.
