Port St. Joe to Keaton Beach
Includes Apalachicola, St. George Island, Carabelle, St. Marks and Keaton Beach
As we approach the end of May, all eyes are on June where our two most popular fisheries are scheduled to open. Red snapper and gag grouper are scheduled to open June 11th but with federally permitted charters, you can start fishing for them June first. From the result of our fishing trips over the last few weeks, fishing should be awesome if the weather will cooperate.
Meanwhile, the bite has been really great for vermillion snapper and black snapper. King mackerel are showing but not in big numbers just yet. We got a nice 15 pounder this week on a flat line while bottom fishing. Cobia are spotty at best; my first mate hooked a giant three days ago but it came off at the boat. There were a few more seen that day but that was it. Live bait is the key to catch all of these fish.
Now is a great time to make sure your tackle is set and ready to go. Do not head out with 5-year-old fishing line and wonder why you keep breaking off. In the grand scheme of things, hooks and line are cheap to replace. Until next week, good fishing!
