Naples to Flamingo
Includes Naples, Marco Island, Everglades City and Chokoloskee
Love is in the air, and the fish are all through the water. Grouper are closed past the 20 fathom break from February first, until March 31st, but good numbers and size of red grouper are being found inside the boundary. Tides Friday for Marco island Caxambas pass are, high 2.3ft 4:32AM, low 0.5 10:19AM, high 2.7ft 4:37PM, low -0.1ft 11:19PM. I tend to enjoy the quarter moon tides as the daily tides are similar in height, so long as the wind doesn’t dramatically effect it. Friday winds are expected to be NNW at 10 to 15mph. Saturday ENE 10 to 20mph. Sunday East winds 10 to 15mph, shifting to SSW in the afternoon. It’s looking to be a great and fishy weekend, cobia are still hit and miss nearshore, so I am patiently anticipating their full force arrival.
Sheepshead must be spawning good on the full moon. The few fish I took for clients last week were a good mix of male and female fish with normal roe, where as the week before they were all females full of roe and ready to pop. It’s been great to see so many big healthy sheepshead this year and I encourage conservative harvesting. I thought for a minute last week I found a lost backwater permit five miles from the Gulf in the backcountry, it was a massive pompano! Island edges and points have been holding plenty of healthy pompano this year, small pink jigs tipped with shrimp, and shrimp on a hook bellow a popping cork have been very successful. Incoming water seems to be most productive.
