406Day: Beacon Awareness Day
April 03, 2018
By Florida Sportsman Editor
Spread the word and you could help save a life: April 6 is Beacon Awareness Day. The good folks at ACR electronics [https://www.acrartex.com/survivor-club/ ], makers of EPIRBs and PLB rescue beacon devices, offer some helpful reminders we should take to heart and share with our friends. Check the expiration date on your beacon battery. Make sure your registration is up-to-date. Test the internal GPS and transmission systems according to instructions provided by the maker.
Also: If you're coming up on Florida vessel registration renewal, bring a copy of your EPIRB or PLB registration to the tax collector's office. You'll qualify for a discount on registration. The amount varies by class of vessel, but for many owners of bayboats and smaller center consoles, a $28.75 discount sounds mighty nice! Here's the breakdown on the Beacon Bill [https://www.flhsmv.gov/motor-vehicles-tags-titles/vessels/epirb-plb-incentives/ ]
