Team Sailsmen Claim 1st Place at the Saltwater Slam!

On Saturday, June 7th Team Sailsmen took to the stage in patriotic costumes and weighed in a total of 144.9lbs to win the 19th annual Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Slam! 97 Boats competed in this one-day tournament with hopes of taking home the big check.

Contrary to the Saltwater Shootout, the first leg of the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit, the morning of the Salwater Slam showed little to no wind and a flat sea. The early bite seemed slow with the exception of the despised Bonito. That all changed around 11am for Team Sailsmen. Four Kings, 2 Dolphin and a Blackfin Tuna later, the Sailsmen were taking home a check for $16,715! Their victory at the Saltwater Slam was the second in two weeks for the Sailsmen team. Fishing together with their wives and girlfriends the team also won the Ladies Fishoff the weekend before. As part of their winnings, Team Sailsmen also won the SweetWater Brew ‘Don’t Float the Mainstream’ Costume Contest that was held during the Slam weigh in.

Weighing in a 51.8lb Wahoo, Team Wish List also made a dent at the scales. That Wahoo was the heaviest fish of the tournament, earning Team Wish List $10, 395 in the Bluewater Challenge, $7,200 for 1st place in the Big 3 and $750 for Heaviest Wahoo. In addition, Team Wish List also won 2nd Place team and 2nd place in the Bluewater Bonanza bringing their grand total to $24,187! Team Wet Hooker followed in 3rd place with a total of 111.4lbs. The top male angler of the tournament was Robert Weisberg on the 4th place team, Strictly Fishing. Top Female Angler went to Lauren Palko of Hook Me Up and Lamar Sapp of Team Liquid won Top Senior. The Top Junior Angler was Brian Miller of Reel Line and Christina Diaz of High Gear won top Pee Wee angler. In addition, the Top Average Joe Team was Team Reel Anarchy and the Top Family award went to team Wild Kat. Even though the Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Slam purse was in excess of $160,000, two categories did not find a winner and are rolling over into the last leg of the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit. The famous Kay Dee Dubya Jackpot, which rolled over from the Saltwater Shootout, reached $11,520 during the Slam. Not one boat caught all 3 qualifying species, a Kingfish, a Dolphin and a Wahoo so the Kay Dee Dubya is expected to exceed 15 grand in the Saltwater Showdown! The Pick 3 Category is another one that will be rolling over into the Saltwater Showdown. The Pick 3 reached $32,940 in the Slam! The 3 target species drawn for this category were Kingfish, Wahoo and Cobia. Since this trio was not caught, the Pick 3 Category is expected to reach $40,000 during the last leg of the Circuit!

The Saltwater Slam was the last chance for teams to qualify for the invite only, championship leg of the circuit, the Mercury/SeaVee Saltwater Showdown. The team with the most points over the three legs of the Circuit will be awarded the acclaimed Showdown Crown, championship rings and a hefty check compliments of Simrad Electronics. With a first place win in the Saltwater Shootout and a 7th place win in the Saltwater Slam, team Makin Time/Living Water is currently in 1st with 55 points. The Saltwater Slam champions, team Sailsmen, are not far behind with 49 points.

The final leg of the series will take place August 7th-10th. At the conclusion of the tournament a Showdown Crown victor will be named. In addition, the Win a SeaVee Boat Giveaway will take place after the awards ceremony on August 10th. A Brand new 29’ SeaVee complete with twin 250 HP Mercury Optimax engines, T-Top & leaning post, trim tabs and a Real X Trailer, a $132,000 value, will be awarded to a lucky winner.
