About the Clean Water Act (CWA)

Originally established in 1948 as the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, and finally gaining significant recognition and expansion in 1972, The Clean Water Act (CWA) made made it unlawful to discharge any pollutant from a point source into navigable waters, unless a permit was obtained. The CWA also set water quality control standards for all contaminates in surface waters.

The Clean Water Act has come a long way since 1972, as it turns 40 this fall. Watch the short video below for more information regarding the CWA’s 40th year.
