FWC Poll on Extending Scallop Season

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is considering permanently adding two weeks to the end of the recreational season for bay scallops and it is asking the public to take this short survey to determine interest in the potential change.

You may click on the link below to take the survey (the survey will be available until June 6):

The survey is also available at MyFWC.com/Fishing by clicking on “Saltwater.”

They are doing this strictly because of pressure from the businesses here that stand to make more money off of a longer season. That is stated right in the survey. There is no data until the June scallop survey on the number of Scallops that are in the area, so how can they determine before then if the resource can withstand a longer season??? There was 9" of rain here this weekend from TS Beryl, and freshwater runnoff on the flats is detrimental to young scallops. If the survey were to indicate that there were fewer scallops available, do you think they would SHORTEN the season??? (note that I said would and not should.) If seasons are not to benefit the resourse, why even have them, FOR ANYTHING!

I vote for opening the season early because the kids are already out of school and this is a great family activity. It is something they look forward to every year. There is already a lot of boast traffic on July 1st week that it would be really nice if the season opened earlier this year.

I haven't seen one scallop in the areas where scallops usually are. I'm a charter boat captain.

There is no scallops anywhere around citrus or levy county last years season looks like it was to much. Should of closed the area instead of worrying about money.

That basically sums it up for this year when a charter boat captain and a fwc officer post comments about scallop population. county should be called circus county not citrus

I guess the captain and fwc officer were looking in the wrong areas. We have and friends have been limiting out each time we go out. The captain's comment looks to have been at the very beginning of the season so maybe it was just bad luck he didn't find anything yet.
