Recently the Diver’s Corner has highlighted a few of the sports and adventures divers pursue in addition to spearing and lobstering—including collecting fish and plants—and here’s another popular pursuit: treasure hunting. There are legions of divers who hunt for treasure in shallow and deep waters around Florida. Many of them hunt around known wreck sites, and plenty also hunt for as yet undiscovered wrecks. If you’re not familiar with the Mel Fisher family saga, you definitely should look into that decades long story of one of Florida’s greatest treasure hunters. Underwater metal detectors aid their searches, and many detectors are available at reasonable prices. Pictured is the Garrett Sea Hunter II Metal Detector, which can be used underwater or on the beach.
FS member century 7 has yet another use for a metal detector: to find what he himself lost on a trip. He’s queried the Diver’s Corner members to ask if there’s a place to rent an underwater metal detector because he “lost his stick-it anchor overboard” and wants to go find it.
