Freediving Is Expanding The Confines Of Southeast Florida
Ten years ago, you seldom found people free-diving with a speargun outside of South Florida and The Bahamas. The lack of 20-foot-plus visibility kept most divers connected to oxygen. But with underwater videos popping up daily, of single-breath trips to the bottom in less than gin clear water, the sport continues to grow.
In fact, Miami diver Juan Comendeiro says that all divers who want to spear-fish in less than 30 feet should be restricted to pole spears or slings, and not allowed to use guns. “Those are the rules in The Bahamas, no tanks or guns, we should do that here too,” Juan states.
For those of you that want to begin to test your single-breath limits, make sure you have a dive buddy with you at all times. If you don’t have such a buddy do as Florida Sportsman member Caldnsik did and post a buddy wanted thread, “Any free-divers near Lake County? I’m just getting into it. I know this is a long shot, but I’ve been diving (SCUBA) for about 15 years now, and have a heavy intrest in free-diving. I have been hanging out at Spearboard, and some of the others. I have been doing some static training, and am looking to go out and spear some fish, or at least do some real free-diving in the area. I have a 23 Proline I dive from and spearfish, and usually go out of Crystal River. Is there anyone near me, or can anyone point me in the right direction?”
